Typing that made me wonder, how would you spell postlet?
Anyway, I just wanted to type …. ever since I picked up and charged up my wee Lumix DMC-TZ100, my view and outlook on my walks has changed. Usually when I walk, I carry a Nikon with a long lens (160-800mm) because primarily, I am on the lookout for birds and wildlife, most of which likes to keep a distance from us humans, sadly, but rightly so.
I have always carried my Android phone as well and use it to record my steps and walk-route as well as recording the birds and wildlife I spot; I have Merlin, Garmin, BirdTrack, iRecord and iNaturalist on my phone. Some of those I’ll use later to ID a beastie or plant so generally, Birdtrack and Garmin are running with Merlin from time to time. The phone takes great photos but, I have always had an issue with the quality of the finished shots and often edit their size and quality before sharing so, when I first took the wee Lumix out and it worked, I was over the Moon. It’s not perfect but, it gives me a bit better quality finished item and it zooms to 250mm.
Now I can look at the landscape around me a bit more than I may have done previously, it also means I am now trying to concentrate on two very different ranges!
At this point I’d like to thank those that gave me feedback on my first post from that camera A Walk with an Old Compact
On my walk yesterday, yet to be edited and shared, the sky was pretty dreich, grey, damp and uninspiring but, now and again there were glimpses of beauty, which I grabbed. I had also decided, due to that dank outlook, I would only take that camera …. see, I can be disciplined 🙂
All of that said, I also came upon more Ravens than I’ve ever seen gathered together before, around eighteen! All flying, playing, landing and calling up on the ridge above me so, the wee zoom was no help at all. I am also pretty certain that I was watching my first Golden Eagle soaring above the same area, possibly the reason for the Raven gathering?
So, yesterday, I had traded off those long shots in favour of a faster walk with options for landscape / macro images and that’s exactly what I hoped to achieve, I more often trade off the walk in favour of the images.
The bane of photography? It is an older camera. It may be outdated now in software terms. Maybe I could get a more up to date model? For now, it is perfect for my needs. I bought a heavier, bulkier super-zoom bridge camera several Moons ago but never really used it, too slow, fails to produce sharp images but … what a zoom!
So what’s my point? Do I even have one or did I forget what it was???? Ooooh cows!
I have an old, new camera that allows me to get the landscape images I often want, without compromising portability and weight while out for a good walk. I will probably carry both from here on but …..
I joined a Garmin walking community which also allows photos of your walks / exercise and I have all but stopped using my phone!
See! There’s always a trade off 🙂

It is a little heavier than my phone, bulkier but smaller in square size and ….. I bought that lovely leather pouch with shoulder strap for it 🙂
And some samples from yesterday ….

I am pretty amazed that a tiny protrusion on distant rocks caught my eye! So I snuck up behind it!

That is a first for me at the reservoir.
Stay safe and well.
