I am really enjoying blogging, it’s so ….. different from standard (anti) social media, especially those BIG corporate names that people seem to be addicted to, you know the ones? Maybe you’re stuck there too? 🙂
Anyway, part of my blogging life includes photographs and of course, the cost of storing / sharing the same. I’ve been using Flickr for a good few years now but it’s all become a bit jaded, to me anyway so I’ve been foraging around t’interweb for somewhere new that offers similar functionality, one of which is linking or embedding photographs to other platforms, such as WP.
Why rant about this to all of you? I’ve run out of storage space on here so, of course, they want me to upgrade yet again but there comes a point at which it is no longer viable or enjoyable when it costs too much. Pondering! My last post, Walking at the reservoir (again) contained almost exclusively embedded images from Flickr, which is fine, no extra storage costs but, does it work for you?
Did any of you click or tap any of those images and end up in a Flickr tab or window and clicking or tapping your way through a set of images?
Was that OK for you if you did? Was it annoying? Didn’t bother? 🙂
So, the point of this post. I am considering deleting all posts and linked images from last year, 2025 but, when I looked at some the images, I kind of panicked! Delete them???? But ….
So, another question I guess. Do you ever look at older posts on any blogs you follow or are we all moving forwards so it becomes irrelevant?
There is no right or wrong answer here but I really would love to hear your thoughts if you don’t mind? I’m thick skinned, honest so honesty is just that, not a direct stab 🙂

Well, I don’t click on flicker. I look at photos on site. I store old photos, because WP is kind of a dairy for me. I fave deleted post that are not relevant to me anymore. And sometimes I do look at older photos from people 😁

No problem with your photos in the latest post from the reservoir, didn’t use Flickr. It happens quite often that I go back to my own older posts, especially if I see that someone else has been in and looked. When I meet new bloggers I usually do that myself, go back in the history and see how they have used their blog. Most of those who have been around for a few years have themselves changed over time, including pictures and text.

Hi Brian: Do not delete your embedded images. You will screw up your search rankings if the end result has broken links. In addition when search engines (essentially still Google) index your website, a huge number of your web traffic will come from older posts. Given my web site is a few years older than yours, AND I worked for just shy of 30 years in software project management with much of that time leading internet projects including web analytics for a very large international manufacturing company, I know this kind of stuff.
One difference between my blog and yours are the number of images you include per post. I tend to be more conservative than you on the number of images per post. In addition I host on my own server and have never embedded images from any other company. I liked Flickr, but the service lost its way and Instagram became a source of influencers and short reels.
Just so you can have real data, my website, 365DaysOfBirds, gets about 90k unique visitors per year who combine for over 140k page views. This data does not include my subscription traffic.

The link from Flickr works fine, although of course it takes me to Flickr. Personally, I don’t see that as a problem, but I don’t know if others feel the same way.
My motto is “first in, first out” – rotation is the key, basically. I’ve been working on this site for six years now, and I’m only about halfway through, although of course it all depends on how many photos you publish and how large they are.
My preference is to publish them large. I used to use 1920 pixels on the longest side, but I’m going to increase that to 2048 and use 85% compression, so even more volume. 🙂 But honestly, I’d rather have people able to zoom into my photos than have them needing a magnifying glass to see the details.
Oh, and I publish in JPG, and occasionally in WebP. WebP is smaller, but you lose the EXIF data, so it’s really a matter of choice.
And finally, my statistics show that people do actually search through the older content, but the oldest posts are rarely visited. In practice, people tend to look at the last two years or so, and not much further back. That’s another reason why I use “first in, first out” whenever necessary.
