October Skywatch

I was trying to think of a suitable title for my collection of night sky images and it was all a bit cheesy so …

I only realised a few moments ago that it is now November! No-one in their right mind would walk up our scary dark lane for Hallowe’en so that came and went 🙂

Please Note – I have noticed that some of the timelapse video clips are taking quite a while to load, if that’s the case and you’d like to see them all or even one, follow this link to my Channels. I don’t do YouTube any more .

Memory tells me that the night skies in October were mostly cloud bound but I did manage to get some shots and timelapse clips of Aurora and in among those a decent number of meteorites, the satellite situation is getting ridiculous, someone really ought to stop that nutter from sending more junk up there, I’d guess almost every shot I have has satellite activity in it, some have crazy amounts 😦

My first shots come from the 12th

01:04

This would have come from a camera set up in the North facing window on the previous evening although I have only a very short clip from the session, it may have been that the cloud eventually filled the sky, there’s been a lot of that recently but the Moon was also up and pretty full.

That same night however, proved to be a different kettle of beans 🙂

19:58

I sometimes forget to check my Aurora app and often rely on glancing out the window, I also have a habit of popping outside regularly, just to check 🙂

There was quite a nice show going on and I put a camera outside for an hour or two; I bought a rain hood for it 🙂

I’m quite into the star trail images now too, love to leave a camera outside for the entire night, focussed on the pole star to get a complete circle.

I did get some short clips from the night / morning of the 18th but I kept no images from it.

That second clip gives us a glimpse of what may have been 😦 I hate missing out like that 🙂

The next night that I thought I might get some clear sky was the 21st and some will have seen the results there ….

No Aurora to brag about but a totally accidental Comet! I didn’t manage to capture it again sadly, I did go out a few times but the weather won out, again!

Early on the morning of the 22nd, having slept badly, I was up and staring into space, with a camera of course and as I turned the camera, I caught sight of a meteorite which it turned out, I captured as well. 🙂

I caught another on the camera in the window.

And another in the time-lapse set, right near the start of the clip.

The next opportunity came on the 26th which turned out to be a totally clear night ….. with zero Aurora so, after clicking through many, many, many images, I came up with a meteorite!

Lucky I don’t stay up all night isn’t it???

On to the 28th then! I usually go out after twilight and try a few test shots, for focus, to check activity and so on, add to that alerts from the Glendale Aurora app, that’s how I plan? and get these shots and clips. I shared a couple to my Mastodon page, for a laugh. I hand hold the camera set at around 1 second but if there’s a good chance of a show starting, I got right to tripod.

These are all edited, too much I think but, for the timelapse clips it works ok. I left the camera out for an hour or two but it was getting very cold and the lens starting to fog so, I moved it to the window, after a warm up period.

So there was a decent showing that night but a lot of cloud around again.

We finally reach the 29th, and finally, a decent show right at the outset.

The Moon was up and reasonably bright so I had the camera set up to try and capture what I could in this conditions. I guess it’s also worth reminding everyone that it is rare we actually get to see this much colour or movement, the camera picks that out for us.

At one point I had both cameras pointing N to NW, one so I could get a panorama shot.

The show was waning but the night was young so, I set the camera up in the window as ever ….

These were between midnight and 30 after.

I got a lot of shots that night, including a couple of meteorites.

Both were just after 03:00.

So, not the best month for Aurora, in our area anyway, I get to admire all the images shared in the Glendale app in the morning from Minnesota, Fairbanks, Michigan ….. yeah thanks guys 😉

That said, I am more than happy with what we get to see without leaving the house so, here’s hoping for clear skies and Aurora throughout November / December and on.

Stay well all.

Thank you for dropping by, I'd really like to hear any comments my tale may have raised in your mind during your visit.
