Back in August 2023, we’d been in our new home just over one year, mostly settled in to the house but still getting our bearings in the countryside and how it all works.
I had taken up residence in the third, smallest bedroom and it was now my Den. I had the Mac set up at my desk, the window out onto the garden to my left, an Ash tree filling the centre of the view and a couple of bird feeder posts and danglers set up around it. I also have a tripod set up at the window with usually a camera on it and a zoom lens fitted.
On August 13th, two things happened as I looked out.
The first Red Squirrel appeared and on a tray feeder, helping itself to peanuts. I was so happy and excited to see it there and don’t care it eats its fill.
I’d seen a couple when out and about the surrounding areas, Grey Squirrels are not welcome here and should be reported – Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels I haven’t seen any Greys in our area ….. yet but they are around 😦
Anyway, that was the first excitement for that day. The second was a bit of a shocker.
A kitten, sitting directly below the tree, looking up hungrily at the bird activity!
How cute is he / she? I scampered outside to try for a few shots but it was gone. I sent photos in to a few Scottish Wild cat sites thinking it may be a hybrid, there are no other cats on this farm on in the area, that I have seen. And that was that …….
Or was it?
I shall update here soon 🙂

Hello Brian,
Both the red squirrel and little kitten are beautiful! It must have been a special experience to see them both on the same day☺️
