I was out for a walk today, up at the reservoir, probably my favourite walk. There were no cars in the car park when I got there, always a good sign for me. The sun was shining, the sky was mostly blue and a decent breeze was blowing.
I was up here to spot the Black-throated Diver pair, I saw them first time last year and saw them again recently so, I like to come up, make sure they’re staying around and hope they might breed here.
So, I headed up the usual trail, loving the silence, the plethora of birds calling and singing all around and eventually made it through the second gate where I decided to sit on a pile of rocks overlooking the shore, mainly to watch a Red Kite I’d seen hunting around up here and a few moments ago, standing on the muddy shoreline below.
A solo Kite was flying around the area and started circling my way, eventually flying by so close, I struggled to keep it in the lens but, amazingly for me, I did.

That first image is what I captured, straight out of the camera but exported from Lightroom to jpeg, no other edits at all.

This second image has only been cropped to place the bird more towards the centre of the shot, no other edits.

That is my final edit. No more cropping so it appears as close as it was and lightened, sharpened a little.
I’m sure it’s not perfect but I’m happy with the result, hope you like it too?
As I scanned through the rest of the shots, I was pretty happy with several so, all in all, a good session for me, with this bird, hence I’ve added it to my best bird shots.
There’s something so grounding about this post, Brian. You really captured that perfect kind of solitude—when the car park’s empty, the birds are busy, and the only real sound is the wind and your own boots on the path. I know that feeling of going out to check on a pair of birds like they’re old friends you hope are still around. And that moment with the Red Kite—magic. It’s amazing how those brief encounters can stay with you for days. Thanks for sharing this. Made me feel like I was right there on the rocks with you.

Thank you, I think that’s what I attempt to do, share the moments, the sights, the sounds. It is a beautiful, tranquil place but, I cannot go at the weekend and go less often in the Summer months 👍
