Backwater in January

I’ve not been getting up to Backwater reservoir as often as I’d like, partly bad weather, partly poor weather, in other words dull and overcast for photography. I did get up three times over January but that doesn’t feel like often now.

Also, it’s pretty quiet at that time of year; the light can be wonderful and the peace for a quiet walk feels fantastic.

A pair of Goosander swam away as I approached the reservoir from the car park and a lone Cormorant stood on the water tower.

There can be quite a few Cormorant up here, plenty of fish for them I presume.

It was one of those glorious but very quiet days, bird wise but what a day for a walk!

I got all the way to the old boat house without any more shots!!!

You can just see the old wooden rails to run a boat out on. Quite a few wild swimmers sit here in the mornings and I’ve come across a few camp fires and, nice to see, not a lot of litter!

This was mid morning, I set off around 10:40 but as you can see the sun was shining but low in the sky and it was pretty chilly.

I got a few sightings of birds,, mostly distant from the main path.

You can tell by the low number of decent shots that it was a quiet day, as I said, makes for a pleasant walk an away for me πŸ™‚ so, I was all the way to the picnic bench before I got this lot.

I think you can see how cold it was by the state of the water those two Goosander are swimming in!

The picnic bench is a lovely stop-off point, just over a mile from the car park and I drop off food here so the Coal Tits, Chaffinch, Robin and a few other interested parties tend to drop by for a look or feed and the Coal Tit above looked great catching the sunlight..

I’m also trying to share some landscapes and views in these pages, it’s one thing talking about a walk but seeing it and the surrounds makes all the difference, I hope?

And that was it for my walk on the 10th of January, back to the car park and the lone sentinel on the water tower, and home.
