Birding walks in Fife

March 25th 2025

Well, these images have been sitting on the Mac for quite some time haven’t they? For some reason I decided to revisit them today and I loved it, there was a lot to be done and …. it sparked the wish to go back so …. later this month we’re going back to Cellardyke 🙂

These are mainly the shots I gathered from my walks in the mornings but not exclusively so, some are walks we took during the days and evenings while there.

It’s my habit to waken first, make coffee and toast as required, when Jo wakens up and we’ll sit and natter, maybe think about the day ahead then I make a cup of Mint or Radiance tea for us and start my preps for a wander along the coast with my camera. Jo will have a relax, read the news etc. while I drift around looking at birds and stuff.

March 25th was our first visit and my first wander along the coast. My wildlife walk starts just before Kilrenny Mill caravan park and I usually walk to the cottage, top left (below) before turning back.

This walk started just after 08:00.

Across the Firth of Forth lies Bass Rock, known as a Gannet habitat and one of the largest Gannet breeding sites in the world, that’s what gives it it’s distinct white coat 🙂

Turning to my left, East-ish I can see the Isle of May, another wildlife sanctuary where Puffins among many other birds come to breed and boat trips can be booked from Anstruther to take limited numbers out there during the season.

I walk along the narrow Shore street right to the end and out onto the coastal path so the sea is on my right and fields on my left, lots of wildlife around here.

It was only when I got back home and looked through my photographs, I no longer carry a laptop, that I discovered I had photographed Corn Bunting, a first for me so big smiles when I realised.

I had only spotted we brown birds on the field so grabbed a few shots, thinking they were Skylarks of which there are plenty. around.

Now I know they are in the area, I will get more and better shots ….. next trip 😉

I picked up a few Redshank on the rocks, this is where Merlin comes in handy, some of the birds here can be difficult to spot so Merlin tells me when it hears something.

In my mind there must be some great birds to be seen here at the right times.

There were loads of Pipits foraging on the rocks, that being a Rock Pipit! I spotted a Wren foraging in the weed and rocks.

A pair of Stonechats on rocks and on the fence posts.

A female and male.

I mentioned the Skylarks

The fields were full of them and plenty singing high in the sky above.

I didn’t spend too long on our first morning, we all wanted to head out as a family so I headed back fairly early, back by Cellardyke old harbour, absolutely made for photographers 🙂

Our first wander into Anstruther is already out there and there are more links to information about the area.

Thank you for dropping by, I'd really like to hear any comments my tale may have raised in your mind during your visit.
