January 5th 2026
Actually, it snowed before this day but today, it really snowed, I love the snow, even though we probably can’t get back up our lane in the car right now so, it stays put for a day or two. When it snows properly, the birds flock to the garden and the feeders and, as happened today, the Brambling drop by. Of course, I took a few shots ….. few!? 🙂
So, here we go.
The first Brambling I noticed in the morning, mixed in with the Chaffinches which is normal.
Most of the birds here are with us all year round, only the Brambling makes special appearances in Winter, the others just turned up in numbers during the snow fall.
The Greenfinches have been with us since the end of Summer, the nesting period, they’re in trouble over here, I heard from an old buddy darn saff that he hasn’t seen one in years!
A male Greenfinch on the branch outside my window as the snow fell.
A female Greenfinch looking a bit cute on the branch.
It got chaotic out there for a while, a fair bit of scrapping for access went on but, there was a semi-orderly queue on the branch 🙂 A Chaffinch female, male Greenfinch and female Greenfinch.
That male Greenfinch looked great. I guess you can work out how these guys got named? 🙂
I tried getting group shots off the branch right outside my window but chaos won out for the most part.
The Starlings formed a disorderly clump below a suet feeder, waiting for suet to fall. 🙂
The Brambling started getting adventurous and foraging on the feeders, they generally stay on the ground foraging.
I liked the set above which shows different birds watching or trying to join the Brambling. A Tree Sparrow, Great Tit then Tree Sparrow and Great Tit 🙂
You may have noticed that I quite like the Brambling 🙂 As I said, they’re fairly rare visitors. They have beautiful colouring and markings.
There are two in the garden today, both males.
Of course you just have to photograph a Robin in snow.
And as for Blue Tits!!!!!
I’m still trying to get a shot of all three of our common Tits in one shot. Coal Tit missing today.
The Starlings also gave up waiting for suet and jumped onto the feeders ….. until I went out to top up 🙂
There now follows a gratuitous Robin in snow shot 🙂
Starlings also look great against snow, in my opinion 🙂
I spotted a group of Tree Sparrows queuing for the suet ball
And last but definitely not least one of the Great Spotted Woodpeckers popped round the tree trunk to check what i was up to.
And that was that! I sat at my Mac, editing, listening to music and enjoyed watching the snow falling and the bird mayhem right outside. The snow is slowly melting, for now and the birds are drifting off to find natural foods 🙂
Until next time … stay safe and well.

Those are wonderful visitors and images! The Robin in the snow is a great image, and so is the woodpecker…well, those are my favorites in this post.

Good morning and thank you 🙂 It is a pleasure for me too, sitting here watching all the activity every day, waiting for something different to drop in, then wandering up to my feeding post to watch there. Love it

Hi Bob, totally agree, I think the white snow brings out the markings on Starlings and the Brambling is a rare enough visitor to make me spend a little more time watching and waiting 🙂

Good morning Kiki and thank you, I try to remember that not everyone knows what a particular bird is and hope to tell a little of a story around them 🙂

A lovely presentation of birds in the snow, So relaxing to enjoy that solas alone in the beauty and wonder of that cool whiteness. I always marvel at how the birds seem so ok about snow and cold. Enjoy your new year my friend

Good morning to both of you down there 🙂 I absoluetly love it when the snow arrives for that very reason, yes we may be a little bit stuck here but, who cares? The animals all just get on with it, I caught a great little clip on my wildlife camera and I must get around to sharing those soon. Have a great 2026

I echo the other comments – such wonderful images, the resilience of nature in deep winter is inspiring. Mr Robin looks very dapper, despite the cold. Hope you are having a good start to 2026.
Best wishes from Japan,
