Ring Solstice dreich?

Ring Out, Solstice Bells – Jethro Tull

Here I go again. There’s that word again ….. dreich!

Dreich from the BBC

Dreich from the Oxford English? 😉 Dictionary

Dreich from Stoory Duster

Just in case you’re still wondering what it means 😉

Winter Solstice, a morning like any other recent morning, dreich!

I awoke to yet another dreich day ahead.

I got up, made the coffee and toast, we drank and ate it.

I made the teas, we have a cup of Mint / Pukka Radiance tea while we waken up but …. I noticed shadows on the bedroom wall as I delivered the tray!

Shadows, Sun?

Surely not! Yes indeed, the Sun had broken through the morning dreich behind the trees opposite the house!

I took a few phone pics then went for a camera.

I like the way a phone camera can treat a scene like this, without AI I might add; move the phone or tap the screen in a given area to get light balance, no faffing about with settings etc. They’re not always great shots but make for a good spur of the moment memory.

Having got the camera, I was back outside, in dressing gown and slippers as usual 🙂

Capturing the Sun rising on a dark cloudy morning leads to all sorts of issue with exposure, trying not to white-out the Sun itself yet maintain some semblance of the light levels of the dark clouds.

I loved the full disc of the Sun through the trees and, when I got to editing, those wisps of cloud above left of it.

The Jackdaws and Crows flew through a couple of the latter shots only adding to the mood in my opinion. I often see them all rise up for an early morning celebration of another new day.

A few moments later, it was all over. Like the shortest day itself, we had the shortest sunrise but …….. it was the Winter Solstice, to be celebrated. The day remained dreich, chilly and wet the entire day. The fire was lit a little earlier and we cosied in for a night on the goggle box.

We have a saying in Scotland, Nichts is fair drawin’ in, for the shortening days into Winter so now, the nichts is fair drawin’ oot!

PS I detest autocorrect, especially when I am trying to type in our dialect. 🙂

So here’s to longer days ahead, the promise of brighter and warmer days to come.

Happy holidays ahead or Merry Christmas to all.

  1. Dreich; a perfect description for what I’ve been experiencing as well for several weeks. Luckily the sun does make an appearance now and then. 😀 Gorgeous photos as always! Wishing you and your family a Happy Holiday season!

  2. I love hearing your words in your dialect – thanks for fighting the dreaded spell checker on our behalf!

I just subscribed – thought I’d already done it, but when I looked your site said I had not. Oops. Well, late to the table, longer to enjoy the cake, I always say 🙂
