I may have mentioned before? It’s been really dreich here for ages now, possibly weeks. The sun peeps through now and again but essentially it has been grey, overcast, cloudy and pretty chilly, not great for photography, not great for walks but I’ve still been getting out and about.
That said, or recent storm kept me in for a couple of days, way too chilly, wet and windy but ……….. I’ve been sitting in my wee den, next to the window that overlooks out feeders 🙂
So, I got a few shots of some of our garden visitors. I’ve been neglecting them recently, because I’ve been out walking or it was too dark to get anything decent but, our modern mirrorless cameras are lot better at dealing with image noise, as are the editing tools available so, here we go.
Starting with a set of all that I captured as individuals, we do get a great variety passing through, probably more to come as the temperatures drop and, who knows? The snows arrive?
The Blackbirds make for great photo subjects in good light, that bright beak and eye-ring can really stand out. I think this is an immature male, there’s still some black on his beak.
The females are a very dark brown and don’t show the eye or beak colouring but they have great feather markings and many confuse young birds with Thrushes.
Jackdaws are brilliant birds to watch and photograph, so clever, funny and aware. I think these two are either rated bits from this year’s brood or a pair that bring their young here because they drop in, together at least once a day. There’s a nesting site, or colony in the trees by the farm houses just along the lane.
These shots were all taken on the 4th, 5th and 9th of this month.
This one just caught my attention because the morning mist was still hanging in the background and the sun was still working its way into our day.

One of two Starlings that were foraging around at that point.
At one point I glanced out and there was a nice collection of birds on the branches.

Two female Greenfinches, a male Siskin joined by a single Goldfinch, the Siskin seem to have re-appeared this last week or so, numbers slowly increasing to around six at the moment.
Now, I shared this single shot elsewhere to highlight the dreich we’ve been suffering for the last few days / weeks 🙂

It looks SO fed up!

Goldfinch, beautiful wee birds and one of the first UK birds I really noticed, many years ago 🙂 Drookit!

Poor wee souls, it was pouring and blowing a hoollie!
We’ve been lucky to have four or five Greenfinches visiting recently and I’m trying to clean the feeders as often as possible, they are very susceptible to “fat finch” disease.
Greenfinches are suffering here in the UK because of this issue so I hop these guys all make it ok.
We also have a Treecreeper that drops by a few times a day, this is a bird I used to rarely, if ever see when we lived in S. Wales, up here they’re everywhere which is great. This one decided to forage on the ground, something I’m not sure I’ve ever seen.
I’m happy to say we had a sunny, chilly day yesterday and we’ve now had a few days break from the rains, also great but, I must get up to the reservoir, see if the levels have improved at all.
Thanks for dropping by, see you on the next page 🙂

Excellent photos!

Aren’t they just Deborah? I think they were the first birds I ever noticed way back in the ’70s!
