Weekly Digest

I’m going to try to organise myself and get some of these photos up here and shared, rather than sitting in a folder ……. I just keep taking more, editing more 😦

October – Week 1

I’ve been walking the green lane loop a lot recently, couple of reasons; it’s new, the wildlife cam is on that route, it takes in the old Oak feeding post and ……… I just like it 🙂

Most recently, the green lane itself has been pretty quiet, I regularly scare up a family of Grey Partridge, around ten of them but that varies, I rarely get a chance of a photo but they often visit the garden so I’m not that bothered by that. The latest, I guess, surprise has been the corner area of a field I walk; it’s planted with Radish which is flowering and attracting butterflies when the right conditions are right. Now my butterfly knowledge is pretty limited so when I started seeing more varieties, I started to wonder, is that normal for this time of year?

The entire field is covered with those beautiful wee flowers but only the corner has all the butterflies; sheltered by the trees? That’s my guess.

I saw a flock of Thrush-like birds rise up into a tree line on the opposite side of the reed beds and grabbed a few shots for ID, looks like Mistle Thrush and Starlings but, a hidden bonus Red Kite as well 🙂

My guess is that the 7th was one of those quiet birding days, not many images.

I think I’ve mentioned before that there are probably a couple of families of Stonechat in the reed beds, purely based on the fact that I see groups in different areas.

Look how quiet the day was!

A maturing Acorn caught my eye 🙂 This was on another old Oak halfway down the hill, I stood there in the sunshine looking around me for a while, then headed back towards home.

I followed the same route on the 8th and again it was the butterflies that first grabbed the lens.

I must add that the white butterflies are hard work to ID, some rarely land so ……. I try not to guess for those but even landed, I’m not certain, depending on what you see of them.

Now I mentioned the Radish flowering so

Most of the flowers are white but there are varied shades through to these, which I think look beautiful.

The 9th brought a few more sightings than yesterday, I went up to the old Oak, dropped some food and hung around a while watching the birds feeding.

I’d say the Nuthatches are the most wary, they’ll flit to and fro between branches keeping an eye on me before dropping down to sort out what’s available.

Pure chance got me the next few shots, I wasn’t aware at the time of what was going on.

It was only sitting here at the Mac later that I realised I’d caught a second bird peeping around the tree trunk behind 🙂 Confirms num bars for me, I’m pretty sure there are / were up to six birds in the area; may be more now after nesting?

Every time I’m up there and the birds arrive in numbers, so do the Treecreepers, sometimes they land on the feeding post as well but not today.

I must have ended my walk there, heading for home again so, I’ll leave you for last week with a classic Nuthatch pose.

I obviously didn’t go out at all on the 10th!!!! We are back into the grey days phase at the moment and they make photography pretty awful, in fact generally make us feel pretty glum all round.

Right, weekend ahead. I hope yours is/was a good one.
