Monday Morning Stroll

Monday October 6th, windy and chilly with some beautiful clouds and blue sky patches. I got out reasonably early to see what I might catch but there wasn’t anything that exciting going on, temperatures are dropping, the wind hasn’t really stopped blowing since last Friday, we’re kind of used to that, being on an open hill πŸ™‚

I headed out to the green lane, kind of counting geese as they flew South; I don’t know where they all go but most pass by again every evening. I roughly counted several hundred Canada Geese and thought that was a lot until I heard, then saw the Pink-footed Geese pass overhead, WAY up high, thousands of them!! I didn’t even bother trying to photograph the spectacle, they’d have been wee dots if I’d shot wide and zoomed in, we wouldn’t have seen how many!

I disturbed the family of Grey Partridge as I entered the green lane, I’m getting used to seeing them flap and fly off fast, roughly ten of them, which is good, I’ll see them around again πŸ™‚

I was keeping an eye on the incoming geese, some fly over quite low.

I do love to catch their eye as they fly over, you can almost see them watching me., that long lens ….. what is that?????

I got all the way along the lane and down the far field, into the field of Radish and along to the wildlife cam I have set up, it was along that last path that I started to see my usual suspects, they kind of follow ahead of me, are they getting used to me dropping some food by the cam?

There’s at least one family of Stonechats that flit around the reed beds and the field.

I love Stonechats as they have this great habit of popping up onto a tall stem and staying there. This one and a couple of others kept doing that as I approached the camera area.

I also see quite a few Reed Buntings, no surprise really, given that I’m walking along the reed bed area πŸ™‚

This lovely female stayed on those wild Raspberry stems while I walked closer. then another two on the Gorse above the cam area.

I’ve included the two long shots to show all the flies that appeared today, it got quite warm as I walked here, down in a dip with little wind. Also you might see a third bunting and a Dunnock in the second one.

I usually stop beside these Gorse bushes to have a look around and start the connection to the cam on my phone, then make my way down into the area I have it set up.

I’m beginning to think they know I drop food off on these visits, there were a couple sitting up there watching me.

That last two shots weren’t cropped, just the lens bringing it closer.

I collected the videos from the camera and climbed the bank back up to the field …

That male Yellowhammer was on the second bush watching me but, a deep squawk behind me grabbed my attention.

A Red Kite and escorting Corvid passing overhead. You can see what had happened to the sky now, grey and bland sadly.

What can be done in PS now, I don’t like doing that but, do hate that bland grey background.

I was mowing carrying on along the field border towards the lane

A low flyby from a Canada goose heading back towards the reservoir.

The wind caught me again as I started up the lane heading for the feeding posts and the old Oak. I can always see “the portal” ahead as I approach the Oak tree.

One Buzzard perching and keeping an eye on me and another calling from somewhere to my right. This Ash suffered in the recent storm and has lost a major branch but, is also dying with Ash Dieback disease sadly.

I also caught a glimpse of a Red Squirrel dashing across the lane as I approached and it did come close to the feeding post but too quick for me and soon disappeared.

I keep an eye on that Ash tree as I watch the Coal and Great Tits feeding at the Oak.

Two, no really, look closer πŸ™‚ Mistle Thrushes, I’ve started seeing Thrushes more regularly now, keeping an eye out for Redwing and Fieldfare arriving.

I’d been out for a couple of hours as I approached the house again

This Tree Sparrow was checking out our guttering for bugs I guess.

And so, another really peaceful if not chilly walk around my favourite loops. I really must get down to the ponds soon, it’s been a while …… maybe today?

See you again soon πŸ™‚
