Return of the Nuthatches
I always think of August as Summer here but it’s not really is it? Well, when does Winter begin and end? Our calendar tends to be divided into quarters; Jan, Feb, Mar etc. but those aren’t the seasons. Our schools are all out for Summer at different times so, is August Summer or Autumn? It’s certainly beginning to feel very Autumnal here in Perthshire, leaves are falling; that’s Autumn isn’t it? When I look back at my photos and walks they all look Summery, because I tend to only go out walking when the weather is decent.
Why get into this at all? Well, I’ve taken a LOT of photos through August, not every day but just about every other day so, I’ve walked on those days. Maybe it’s just been a good month for walks and I happen to always carry a camera?
So, August 1st 2025! I know, I’m way behind as ever.
I go out, I walk, I take photographs, I weed through them, I go out, I take………
Then I look back.
As ever, I started taking shots at the old Oak.

A young Great Tit sat back a while and posed for me, they’re quite shy about coming forward, the Coal Tits are in there like hey’ve never been fed!

Within that first minute, the first Nuthatch showed up, I hadn’t seen or heard any for ages so it was great to see they are still around.

There are at least two Robin nests near the Oak, one just off to each side so, I expect to see Robins when I visit, this one obviously had young mouths to feed!
Strangely, the Chaffinches up here are quite shy too, they’re definitely not shy in the garden or near a public picnic bench 🙂

Did I mention Coal Tits?

There are plenty low hanging branches around and I’ve added a couple but these guys just dive on the food and go, I do try to get shots away from the food when possible.

Ooops, more Nuthatch shots, I think they’re beautiful birds, quite shy, fast moving but, when they do stop they can be great posers 🙂
I took the woodland path from the Oak, down the steep hill to the largest pond.

There are so many Common Darters around at this time of year, all around the ponds of course but also most of the lane too, these are probably the most common here, really! 🙂

I also noticed there were a lot of Ladybirds, LadyBugs around as well, this being a seven spot.

There were also a few Black Darters around, I don’t remember seeing them here before.
Lots of Damselflies around, usually Common Blue, Blue-tailed but this was Emerald Damselflies.

I find all damsel and dragonflies fascinating, so intricate, complex wing structure and their flying abilities!
As I walked back towards the Mill Pond, past the newest pond, I spotted a few Common Darters flying quite steadily so …

Woohoo! Got one! They’re usually so fast and such random flyers.
I also started seeing lots of day flying moths but they tend to fly by then disappear!!!

I believe that is a Shaded Broadbar!
And that was it for August 1st, not an overwhelming amount of images?
Anyway, I now intend to try and catch up with them all so, see you again soon?
Stay well.

Not sure I have ever seen an Eurasian Nuthatch before, had to look that one up. Very similar to our Red-Breasted variety here in the states. Always fun to experience new birds, thnx.
