I went out for my patch wander yesterday April 23rd, it wasn’t a great day but I like to get out for a walk at least once a day. It was one of those days when the sun shone it was quite warm, when it didn’t it felt freezing so, I eventually decided a t-shirt and light fleece should do and off I went.
It actually clouded over again almost as soon as I set off, not good light for photography at all but, I always carry a camera….. you never know! π
Up between the shed, past the cowshed and the injured Jackdaw hopped away into the field as I approached. I say it’s injured because it has yet to fly away, always hops or runs ahead of me. It seems to feed ok around the farm yard.
It hopped ahead of me, up onto an old wood pile and eventually dropped down the other side.
There really wasn’t a lot moving out there today, I was all the way down the lane looking for the Wheatear before I got any photo opps.
She’s been here for around a week, maybe more and I’ve yet to see a male, here’s hoping. She hopped across the road onto the grass and hid as I walked by.
I walked all the way up to the feeding post, dropped off some food, not a lot happened so, I carried on down to the mailbox and back up again, for the walk, spotting, not a lot, although I heard plenty and had Merlin running as an assistant.
When I got back up to the feeding post three Jays shot off into the trees, as they always do so, I tucked myself into the treeline opposite, stood very still (ish) for 45 minutes or so and ……….. they appeared once, I must have twitched an eyebrow and they were gone again!
While I waited.
And that was it, I heard a good few others as the list shows below so, I headed for home. A GSWoodpecker was drilling away to my left and I’d seen a new hole appearing in a nearby Oak so …
I took a leisurely stroll back home and probably sat here at the Mac for a good while, editing photos and listening to music. π
Today I spotted or heard:
- Willow Warbler
- Blackbird
- Robin
- Chiffchaff
- Blue Tit
- Great Tit
- Treecreeper
- Raven
- Common Buzzard
- Chaffinch
- Common Gull
- Great Spotted Woodpecker
- Pied Wagtail
- Woodpigeon
- Jackdaw
- Rook
- Carrion Crow

That’s quite a long list of birds you’ve got there β the Chaffinch is beautiful! I occasionally see them here too, but never had the chance to photograph one yet; they’re too skittish around here. The cloudy and threatening weather looks all too familiar. Let’s hope spring brings some drier and sunnier days. All the best! Marc.

Hi Marc, I think I’m very lucky with the numbers and types of birds around us here, Chaffinch are the most common in the garden here but when I walk out around the area there’s always something to photograph…… most of the time π€£π
Looking forward to a good week next week π€
All the best to you
