January Skies Pt. 2

I’m looking back at the images I have edited and those I have already shared, we’ve had a pretty good month so far as far as the sky goes, quite a few clear nights and mornings, which is always nice šŸ™‚

That said, I’m in my wee den, looking out the window at a bird feeder that is trying its best to get horizontal and wee birds that are trying to keep a grip on the planet; it’s blowing a gale out there, literally. (I detest the overuse / misuse of that word these days)

I’m also kind of amazed that I’m almost keeping up with the editing, apart from bird shots 😦

January 7th saw a clear sky and waxing gibbous Moon in a clear sky. Great word that, Gibbous!

“When the moon is more than half full and still increasing its illuminated surface, it’s called waxing gibbous. The word ā€œgibbousā€ comes from the Latin for ā€œhumpā€ and has been used for centuries to describe rounded or convex shapes, like swollen eyes or the back of a camel.”

If you’d like to learn more, have a look at Moon Phases UK

I was out for a walk on the 8th and spotted the Moon rising over the hillside across the reservoir.

And later that afternoon / evening …

70% waxing gibbous Moon

What about “waxing” and “waning”? Well, waning means fading and waxing is flourishing or growing.

Moon phases

On the 9th I was out walking once again and spotted the waxing gibbous Moon over the trees.

I’ve only taken Moon images in the past if it’s a “special” full Moon or it just happens to be there when I’m out and about, this clear weather has just given me more opportunities.

Jan 10th – 18:27 – Waxing gibbous at 88%

As all of you who photograph the night sky will know, the Moon being almost white, against a darker sky makes for interesting management of the camera settings.

Ss it turned out, the Moon was actually full on the 13th, guess how the weather was here? So, I got some shots on the 12th at 98%, they’ll just have to do šŸ˜‰

Partially hidden by cloud at that point, later it was totally hidden.

So I missed the full Moon after all those clear evenings, dammit! šŸ™‚

Enough Moon stuff. There have also been a few interesting evenings in terms of light and Aurora.

As I was finishing my walk on the 9th, I noticed the sun setting between the trees.

As I carried on back towards the house, I kept looking back up the hill.

You may see this line off trees quite often in my shots šŸ™‚

On the 16th there was a pretty nice range of light and colour as the sun went down.

I was just parking the car when I noticed the sunset. I absolutely LOVE the subtleties of shades there can be in our sky but they don’t always come out well in images, unless over-egged in PS or LR and I try not to do that if I can help it.

One of my favourite views, I have a lot of shots of this view šŸ™‚

That’s ten days worth! It’s not been a bad month for me so far; it’s blowing a gale out there right now but here’s hoping it blows through quickly and safely for us all.

See you for the next set.
