January Skies

So after that tremendous Aurora to end 2024 and start 2025 we’ve had mixed skies here but quite a few clear nights, which is great.

I often set up a camera in our North facing window to capture a full night / morning of images and then examine them quickly the next day before deciding if there is anything worth turning into a movie.

There have a been a few nights that have been just that, a clear night with lots of stars!

January 2nd was when I first grabbed a few more shots.

There are planets galore in our sky right now and Venus was tracking with the Moon for a good while.

I do like a nice panorama, I may have said before, this looking due SW round to NE.

I got a decent shot of the Moon and Venus on the 3rd.

Most of these nights were freezing cold, to us 🙂

The 4th saw a bit more activity.

17:10

A faint green bow of Aurora could be seen forming over the hill at 17:10, very early Aurora.

In that panorama the sun has just set, the Moon and Venus following and the faint green bow of Aurora is just forming on the far right.

The Aurora continued to grow brighter as the sun dropped further below the horizon.

I was trying to get three shots that could stitch together but it wasn’t easy that night and cloud was spreading North, looking it was going to block it out.

The band of cloud stayed in that position for most of the display so, I cropped it out but there was a heck a coloured display going on above all the cloud that was seen elsewhere.

Here are a few more great examples of what we could see.

As you can see, it was quite a show, we were inside when all this was going on.

As I said, I pop out and in, usually during breaks in our viewing.

The Moon had a lovely Halo around it for a while.

And, I did manage to stitch together a few shots, not particularly well but, I think you can see what was intended.

It was quite a bow of light, while the sky was clear enough.

The Milky Way was swinging around towards the Aurora.

And finally, for that night, a complete view from SW around to NE, Moon and Aurora.

So it’s been a good start for me so far, a fair bit to see and there’s more to come, a planetary alignment so here’s hoping for clear skies for that.
