What a front!

In 2018 I was working on a big UK wide IT rollout and our base was in Hampshire (Hants in short). I was living just outside Cardiff in S. Wales, in a Town called Caerphilly, which meant a commute of over two hours each way on that wonder of British engineering known as the M4, then a few twisty A roads to my chosen accommodation for the week. Sunday, East; Friday, West again.

IT WAS NOT FUN.

Let’s not get into the etiquette of driving on a British 3-lane motorway, nor the speed limits, lane disciplines…..because that all goes out the window on the M4.

Add to the mix, the Newport tunnels! A bottleneck designed by beelzebub himself (or herself šŸ˜‰) all made for a very unpleasant time in any vehicle when all you really want is to be home.

There were times when it was all OK and I could actually enjoy the trip. I always had a camera with me and there were many options for photo-stops along the way, I’m just not one of those people that likes to break up a trip but, now and again I did.

It was a Monday, for some reason. December 3rd, according to the exif for this image. The weather was NOT looking good for the drive but, the light was absolutely astounding. Huge rolling, dark clouds, heavy downpours of rain and stunning rainbows. If I could just stay ahead of it, I knew the perfect photo-stop.

There’s a steep ridge en route where Hackpen White Horse is carved and the view from the top would fit the bill perfectly. So, I made for that site, using a different route just for this occasion and when I got there and parked…

I had to stay in the car and allow a wild, windy and wet squall blow over before I could venture outside for a few shots and I was quite please with this panorama I stitched together, which I hope conveys my previous descriptions.

Needless to say, I grabbed as many shots as I could before diving back into the car to avoid a complete drenching.

I LOVE what I call weather shots and this was some of the best weather I’d seen.

There was quite an aftermath to that front when it had passed over too.

I only had a bridge super-zoom at the time but, it did the job for that time, for me.

Simply photography.
